You're pregnant... now what?!?

Updated: Aug 1

Pregnancy can be a time filled with joy and wonder, but it can also be exhausting and filled with emotions.

You need to spend more time choosing your birth team then you do on your registry. While I am a huge advocate for homebirth, I realize its not the right choice or option for everyone. I recommend everyone has a doula, which is like a birth coach and cheerleader and guide through birth all in one.

Acupuncture is safe to continue throughout pregnancy. We typically treat weekly or biweekly during the first trimester, more often if morning sickness is extreme. As most women feel better during their second trimester, we move to monthly treatments unless something comes up. We start biweekly or weekly until 35 weeks, then weekly or twice a week until birth.

Educate yourself as much as possible on the type of birth you hope for. Nothing ever goes exactly as planned and there are circumstances out of your control, but you can give yourself the best shot at your dream birth through some planning and work.

The business of being born is a great movie about the medical industrial complex and the financial factors that drive the modern healthcare system and its impact on obstetric care.

My favorite website for data based information is Evidence Based Birth. Their articles have linked to research data and also pros and cons of any given study. They also have a podcast. If you are getting information from your provider, check and see what the evidence actually is about. They also have childbirth education classes.

I had two very different birth experiences. Despite working in healthcare for years, I felt not well educated with my first labor and had a lot of trauma around that. I refused to go through that with my second, and had an amazing homebirth with Heather Lemanski at Blue Water Midwifery https://www.bluewatermidwife.com/.

Feel free to reach out and we can connect you with upcoming local birth classes. We can also help connect you with lactation consultants and provide herb and supplement recommendations for pregnancy and postpartum.
