Achilles Tendon Rupture, a Integrative Healthcare Team Approach
Always get another opinion and work on building your healthcare dream team.
Last summer, my husband Brian tore his Achilles’ tendon (#olddadbasketball ). When I was contacting orthopedic offices, they wanted to immediately schedule surgery without any alternatives. Thankfully, I had just written a paper on the research of treatment of Achilles rupture (quite ironic). Unless it is a complete tear, there tend to be worse outcomes after surgery 5 years out versus conservative treatment.
Brian immediately started with acupuncture (one hour post injury and daily for a few weeks) plus oral and topical herbs. He has laser treatments (Brookside Chiropractic with Dr. Rachel and Dr. Travis). A month later, he had PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injection. His sports med doc gave him an extensive rehab protocol. His CrossFit coach brothers him do the entire rehab protocol over the course of a year. He bought a bike and started riding around town between his job sites.
Now, he is stronger than before. He can run and jump without pain and has full range of motion. I have seen so many patients need multiple follow up surgeries after their first Achilles surgery. Surgery is always an option but should be a last resort- and understand there are no guaranteed outcomes.
There are no real quick fixes in medicine. Get a great healthcare team and commit to the process. At Huron Point Acupuncture, we strive to be a part of your integrative medical team.
